Section 508 Training

Complying with Section 508

Web Standards

Image capture of a web page.

As you design, develop, and update web content for your agency, consider asking your web and content development personnel or contractor questions such as these to determine if they can meet the Section 508 requirements:

  • Are graphics and multimedia used in such a way that a user doesn't need to see or hear them to use the page?
  • Are layout elements labeled correctly? Can the page be used with those features disabled?
  • Do navigational elements consider the needs of an AT user?
  • Are timed responses required?
  • Can AT read all screen text?
  • Are applets (e.g., Flash) needed to view the site content? Are the applets accessible?
  • Will a PowerPoint presentation be converted to view on the web?
  • Are all PDF files accessible?

If the page for whatever reason can't meet the technical requirements, then § 1194.22 (k) specifies that you must provide a text-only page that is updated concurrently with the primary page.
