Section 508 Training
Complying with Section 508
Telecommunications Standards
Historically, telecommunications technologies were available to everyone,
but those with hearing disabilities found some aspects challenging. With
the advent of telephones with LCD screens and complex phone systems, people
with hearing and/or visual disabilities are now unable to access certain
features. Providing redundant features is often necessary to meet the
needs of these users.
As you procure telecommunication systems and devices, consider asking
the vendor or contractor questions such as these to determine if they
can meet the Section 508 requirements:
- How would someone use the features of
the phone and the phone system without being able to see the display?
- How would someone use the features of
the phone and the phone system using a TTY device?
- Have you made a provision to provide
an analog line, if necessary, for a TTY?
- Can someone with a hearing aid use this
phone?
- Are timed responses used?
- Can the controls be operated with limited
dexterity?
