Video and Multimedia Standards

In this age of television and cinematic entertainment, it's not surprising to see more agencies using video and multimedia to communicate to their employees and to the public. The concept of captioning for people with hearing impairments shouldn't be new to you. However, the idea of “audio descriptions” for people with visual disabilities may be novel.

These standards apply to video products such as televisions and computer television tuner cards and to multimedia including animations, computer-based training, web casts, television broadcasts, and traditional videos. As you procure multimedia products and services, consider asking the vendor or contractor questions such as these to determine if they can meet the Section 508 requirements:

  • Does the video equipment have the necessary circuitry?
  • Will the video or broadcast be captioned?
  • Does the video or broadcast contain audio descriptions? If not, how will visual elements be communicated to people with visual disabilities?
